Mead is a honey-based alcoholic drink that has been around for millennia. It's the oldest alcohol in the world, but that doesn't mean there was no room for improvement.
Middlemist is not like the medieval mead you might be familiar with. We use local honey and real fruit to create a drink that's not too sweet and is supremely drinkable.
We also like to experiment with flavors that our brewing ancestors couldn't dream of, like passionfruit or hot honey! Our meads vary from 4.5% ABV to 17% ABV, which means there's something for everyone. Be sure to check out our non-alcoholic options too.
Everything is brewed in our Downtown Somerville taproom.
Who are we?
Friends turned Brewers
We're Ilija, Ryan, and Caleb (left to right) and we're excited to share our passion for mead with you!
The three of us met at Rutgers University and became fast friends over nerdy board games and delicious food. As Ilija and Ryan completed their PhDs in Microbiology, they were able to apply their expertise to create the first Middlemist meads. Friends and family were blown away by how different they were to the meads they had tasted before.
Quickly, the meads started racking up homebrew awards around the country. Caleb quit his corporate job, and the three of us have been pursuing our dream of a craft meadery ever since.
Rooted in Somerville
We intentionally chose Downtown Somerville for our taproom because of the walkable downtown and strong community. We're looking forward to being both a brewery and a social space designed for gathering.
